Tom Denton scored twice as the Spireites eased to a comfortable 5-1 victory over Basford United in the FA Trophy. Lee Shaw scored his first goal for the club with Alex Kiwomya and Jonathan Smith also on target.

Martin Allen handed new signing Alfie Beestin his Chesterfield debut after signing the midfielder on loan from Doncaster Rovers. There was also a return to the starting line-up for another loanee, striker Jordan Hallam.

Out of the side went Curtis Weston, who has been struggling with a tight hamstring and Levi Amantchi, who was named among the substitutes.

The first chance of the match fell to the Spireites when Jordan Hallam laid the ball off to Kiwomya whose shot was straight at keeper Kieran Preston.

The first effort from the visitors came when James Reid saw his shot deflected wide by Bradley Barry.

Chesterfield took a 12th minute lead when Barry’s low cross found Kiwomya inside the area and he fired low past Preston.

Denton headed wide after meeting Barry’s free-kick while at the other end, Reid put a 20-yard effort wide.

Hallam went close to extending Chesterfield’s lead in the 25th minute when he struck Preston’s left-hand post with a free-kick.

Denton headed wide before adding a second goal in the 34th minute. The tall striker dived to head in from close range after Jonathan Smith’s header from a Beestin cross came back off a post.

Shaw looked for an opening after chasing a long ball, advancing into the area, but his shot was deflected wide.

The woodwork was struck again a few minutes before the break when Haydn Hollis headed against the bar.

Shaw put a shot on the turn over the bar and then, seconds before the half-whistle was blown, he fired in a low shot which was saved by Preston.

Shaw had another effort saved early in the second half before Smith put the Spireites further ahead in the 53rd minute, finding the net from 20 yards out.

Shaw (58) made it 4-0 after running at the defence and firing in a shot which Preston got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.

Three minutes later, Denton scored his second goal of the match and Chesterfield’s fifth, tapping in at the near post from substitute Ify Ofoegbu’s low cross.

Matt Thornhill fired over from a free-kick and then Liam Bateman saw his deflected shot come back off the bar before Basford did score a consolation goal.

The visitors struck in the 73rd minute when substitute Zac Goodson found some space and beat Callum Burton with a low shot.

Barry blocked Courey Grantham's effort late on while Ofoegbu tested Preston with a shot in stoppage time.

Spireites: Burton, Barry, Binnom-Williams, Hollis, Evans, Smith (Rowley 55), Beestin, Kiwomya, Shaw (Ofoegbu 60), Hallam, Denton (Sharman 65).
