Chesterfield’s FA Cup journey ended in the second round following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town on Sunday afternoon.
\Martin Allen made three changes to his starting line-up following Tuesday night's 1-1 draw against Bromley with Lee Shaw, Will Evans and Alex Kiwomya all coming in. They replaced Zavon Hines, Joe Rowley and the suspended Laurence Maguire.
The Spireites had a chance to take the lead when a low, driven Kiwomya cross flashed across the face of goal and Tom Denton, sliding in, couldn’t turn the ball goalwards. After a hectic goalmouth scramble, Grimsby managed to get the ball clear.
Chesterfield were the better side in the opening half an hour, but the visitors took the lead in the 37th minute. A Ben Pringle corner was glanced on to Charles Vernam at the far post and he tapped home from close range.
Much of the first half was controlled by Chesterfield but Grimsby went in at the break 1-0 up.
The Spireites boss made two substitutes early in the second half with Hines replacing Jordan Hallam and Levi Amantchi coming on for Denton.
Curtis Weston went close to equalising for the Spireites. Jonathan Smith’s shot deflected into Weston’s path and he fired in a volley which was blocked and drifted just wide of the target.
Grimsby caught Chesterfield on the counter-attack when Harry Clifton was released one-on-one with Callum Burton. Clifton’s initial shot was well saved by Burton, but Clifton latched on to the rebound and fired home to double Grimsby’s lead in the 70th minute.
Chesterfield came close to pulling a goal back late on when Smith’s lofted cross found Amantchi at the far post but the young striker failed to connect with his header.
