Chesterfield's winning start continues

Curtis Weston’s goal shortly before the hour-mark ensured Chesterfield’s perfect start to the season continued as they beat Braintree Town 1-0 to make it three wins out of three.

Martin Allen made one change to the starting line-up with Marc-Antoine Fortune coming in to make his full debut for the Spireites. Laurence Maguire, who started in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win against Aldershot Town, was missing from the matchday squad.

Christie Pattison put an early low shot on target but it was straight at Shwan Jalal, who saved comfortably.

Charlie Carter’s pass nearly set Gozie Ugwu free but keeper Ben Killip was off his line smartly to claim the ball.

Ugwu then connected with a cross from Jerome Binnom-Williams cross but he was unable on steer the ball on target at the near post.

Jalal came to Chesterfield’s rescue with a crucial save from Danny Rowe after the striker found himself through on goal.

Michael Nelson got his head to a corner from Zavon Hines and saw the ball drift beyond the far post.

A good run from Hines down the left wing ended with him sending over a cross to the far post but the ball was a little too high for Ugwu whose header went wide.

Hines put a free-kick just over the bar early in the second half and then Fortune threatened

Weston (58) scored with a good finish after a long-ball was headed down into his path by Fortune.

Drew Talbot tried a long-range effort which went off-target and Binnom-Williams put an overhead kick wide.

With eight minutes remaining, Hines was taken off and replaced by Sam Wedgbury. Sam Muggleton was also brought on in the final minute as a replacement for Robbie Weir.

The visitors never seriously threatened to force an equaliser and Chesterfield saw the game out to claim all three points.
