Two first-half goals from Charlie Carter and a penalty from Marc-Antoine Fortune gave Chesterfield a winning start at home as they beat Aldershot Town 3-0.
There were a couple of changes to the starting line-up following Saturday’s 1-0 win at Ebbsfleet United with Laurence Maguire and Jerome Binnom-Williams replacing Bradley Barry and George Smith.
Gozie Ugwu was the first to threaten with a shot which came back off the woodwork.
The opening goal come in the tenth minute when Curtis Weston back-heeled to Carter inside the area and the midfielder shot past Jake Cole.
Ugwu then had a shot charged down as the Spireites looked to build on their promising start.
Shamir Fenelon was through on goal but Shwan Jalal came to Chesterfield’s rescue, saving the striker’s low shot.
Will Evans met a Zavon Hines corner but he was unable to direct his header on target.
Drew Talbot bravely carried on playing following treatment after being on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Lewis Kinsella.
Hines did well on the left-hand side of the area and sent over a low cross which just evaded Ugwu.
A superb individual goal from Carter (40) put the Spireites further ahead. The midfielder ran at the defence, evading a couple of challenges and smashed the ball high into the roof of the net, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Ugwu put an effort on target before the break but his shot was comfortably saved.
Aldershot’s Matt McClure shot wide soon after the re-start while a free-kick from Hines went over the bar.
There was some neat footwork from Binnom-Williams inside the area before he shot over the bar.
Shortly before the hour-mark, Fortune came on to make his home debut for the Spireites, replacing Binnom-Williams.
Martin Allen made a second change in the 70th minute, sending on Sam Wedgbury in place of Hines.
Fortune (82) added a third goal with a confidently taken penalty after Talbot was brought down inside the area.
There was a change in attack a minute later when Lee Shaw came on in place of Ugwu.
Carter went close to completing his hat-trick, striking a post after being set up by Fortune.
