Spireites boss Jack Lester spoke to the media yesterday, ahead of tonight's match against promotion chasing Exeter City, 7.45pm, here’s what he as had to say ahead of the game…
On the mood after the Mansfield defeat: “I think we’re all a bit bruised by it. To lose a derby game like that takes a while to get over, but we’ve got to get over it quickly and we were in on Sunday and everything was a bit sombre when you lose a game 1-0.
“There was nothing in the game, there’s been nothing in the past few games, but we’ve not had the break of the ball – I’m not saying we’ve had good performances – but Grimsby didn’t offer us nothing and Mansfield didn’t offer us anything.”
On Ian Evatt’s post-match comments: “You’ve got to stop goals, score goals and create goals, they are the three things you get judged on as a footballer and I think that was Evatt’s gripe and he doesn’t think people are doing their jobs and he’s entitled opinion because of the way he played.
“When you’re in a fight you need to fight, and you need leaders and that’s why Evatt was so instrumental on Saturday because he is that, but you are what you see, if you’re suggesting people aren’t at it enough then that’s what you’re seeing.”
On consistency and confidence: “Consistency is key, I’ve mentioned that before. We have shown what we can do when we play at our best, but we need to replicate that. You need to replicate that day in day out to be a top footballer you need to know what kind of performance you are going to give.
“It’s confidence of course and the run you’re on makes it difficult and it’s difficult to play in these situations sometimes, but it’s not impossible and it needs to be better.”
On tactics: “That’s what we’re looking at. Every time we play two up front we’ve lost so, when we go 4-4-2 we have been overrun. We brought in Giles [Coke] to try and effect that. We’ve tried a diamond and we’ve lost as well.
“The centre-forwards at this club apart from Kristian Dennis have scored two goals all season so, playing two upfront doesn’t guarantee you goals and what we need is people to start chipping in.
“There are other ways of playing two upfront and maybe that. I can understand the fans saying it and I can’t, because we had a comeback from Morecambe and every time we have won this season we have had one up front.”
On Exeter City: “They change their shape quite a lot. They played a back three against Accrington where they drew. I watched them earlier in the season against Port Vale where they had a four so, they know how to pick up results.
“They have some good players and the manager has been there along time and has a good understanding of what’s required from an Exeter team.
“I think they have a great module and they play some good football. You don’t know what you are going to play against because they change it up quite a lot, but they have a good understanding of what the manager wants.
On belief: “We’ve had a look for a little while and we we’re hoping to have picked up more points in the last couple of games.
“You must believe you are going to do it, we’re not playing Real Madrid, we’re going to places where we’re capable of winning. We need a win to give the everyone some belief.”
