The Spireites are supporting Dave Amans, who will be cycling the full length of the Pyrenees at the end of May to raise money for the Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia.
PACT is a charity based in Sheffield that was formed to create support groups for families whose children have cancer.
Dave, 40, has been involved with the charity for the last couple of years after his best friend’s younger brother sadly passed away.
This is not the first time that he has contributed in such a way to raise money for PACT as he also took on the same challenge in 2014, managing to raise £3,000 in the process.
The ride, which is taking place over six days, beginning on May 28, is coast to coast across the Pyrenees from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.
It is 450 miles in total, meaning that Dave will be looking to complete around 75 miles each day.
Despite being a few years older than he was last time he took on the ride, Dave feels he is in better prepared this time round.
He said: “I feel in better shape this time than I did last time and I am hoping to enjoy it a little bit more. The added challenge this time will be the weather conditions because some of the big mountains I will be going over only open at the beginning of May.
“On those days when you are not motivated to get out on your bike and do some training, you remind yourself of what you are doing it for. I have read the testimonials from some of the kids and that motivates you to keep going.”
New facilities have recently been built at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, prompting Dave to raise further funds for the charity. “They have just built a new outpatient suite and day care centre at Sheffield Children’s Hospital,” he said.
“They are having a big push at the moment, which is why I really wanted to do something this year to help support that.”
Dave has already been supported by a number of local businesses including Print Digital Media, who will be the main sponsor.
Dean Newman, managing director of PDM, is delighted to be able to contribute. He said: “We were approached to see if we could do some sponsorship and we were more than happy to do so because it is a great cause.
“Dave has done lots of training and looks very fit so I am sure he is more than capable of doing it.”
In addition to PDM, the likes of Hotpod Yoga, Track and Tyres, Masons Coffee Lounge and RH Financial Consultancy have also backed the cyclist.
A number of PACT contributors are Spireites and Dave has also been supported by both the football club and the Chesterfield FC Community Trust.
Hayleigh Vasey, Chesterfield FC Community Trust’s business development officer, added: “It is a great charity and we are proud to be supporting Dave and wish him all the best.”
