Chesterfield suffered their third consecutive away league defeat, going down 5-1 to Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium

A Chris Porter double, along with strikes from George Cooper and Perry Ng gave the hosts a 4-0 lead, before the Spireites pulled a consolation back through Eddie Nolan's own goal.

Callum Ainley then made it 5-1, converting the rebound after Jordan Bowery's shot was saved.

Manager Gary Caldwell made one change to his starting line-up with Andy Kellett replacing the suspended Robbie Weir.

And it was Kellett’s misplaced pass which sent through Alex’s top scorer Porter who slotted home past Tommy Lee from seven yards after six minutes.

The rest of the half was a closely contested affair with both teams struggling in the final third, with Crewe favouring the long ball and Chesterfield choosing to keep the ball on the deck.

Chesterfield had a good opportunity in the 20th minute, when Kellett found Jordan Flores, whose low drive was palmed away by goalkeeper Ben Garratt.

Matt Briggs and Chris O’Grady combined well on multiple occasions, but many of their passes were cut out by some stout defending.

The Spireites’ best opportunity came at the end of the half, one minute into added time.

A cross from Scott Wiseman, which failed to find Kristian Dennis, did find Briggs at the back post, but he could only fire into the ground and over the bar.

Crewe doubled their lead, two minutes into the half, when Porter ran down the left side into the box before placing the ball into the bottom right corner for his second goal of the game.

The Railwaymen added a third in the 54th minute when Lee’s throw was intercepted, Ng was found in the area and he cut inside and fired low across the despairing Lee.

In the 65th minute, George Cooper added a fourth. Finding space in the box, he turned Ian Evatt and fired past Lee from close range.

The Spireites scored a consolation goal 20 minutes from time. Kellett found Dennis who directed his powerful header onto the crossbar, the rebound struck Nolan and the ball trickled into the net for an own goal.

Nine minutes from time, Bowery forced a save from Lee but he could only parry to the feet of substitute Ainley who made no mistake to grab the Alex’s fifth goal.
