Chesterfield succumbed to a 4-0 defeat to Stoke City U23s at St Georges Park this afternoon, with the Spireites struggling to deal with the pace of the hosts’ front line.
The hosts quickly took the lead in the sixth minute, Potters striker, Joselu burst into the box and slotted into the bottom corner across returning goalkeeper, Tommy Lee.
Tyrese Campbell the provider of the goal, would then turn converter as he was put through by the Spaniard and took aim, Lee got a hand to his effort, however the ball looped into the net to make it 2-0 three minutes later.
The Spireites thought they’d got one back through Gozie Ogwu seven minutes later, with the striker meeting a Jak McCourt pass and finished strongly, only to be flagged for offside.
Ian Evatt headed over from a McCourt free-kick and Chris O’Grady forced the goalkeeper into a reflex save on the stroke of half time as the Spireites tried to find a way back into the match, but it was the Potters who went into the interval two goals ahead.
Campbell’s pace was still proving problematic in the second half and this eventually paid off six minutes from the restart, when he found himself through on goal again before firing into the bottom corner via the post to seal the contest.
It was to be a frustrating day in front of goal for the Spireites, they would be flagged offside on 5 occasions with many long balls falling by the way-side.
To rub salt in the wounds only 10 minutes after the third goal Stoke striker Dominic Telford burst into the box and was brought down by Evatt forcing the referee to point to the spot.
Telford stepped up and calmly converted into the bottom corner.
Substitute Sam Hird and Evatt both went close for the Spireites in the second half, but it was to prove a frustrating afternoon for Gary Caldwell’s men, whose next friendly comes on Tuesday night, when Rotherham United visit the Proact (7.30pm).
