Turner Provides Managerial Search Update

13 January 2017

Chesterfield director of football Chris Turner is confident that the club’s new manager will be in place after the weekend.

Turner along with director Ashley Carson has been travelling the country this week interviewing numerous candidates and both are confident that they have the right man.

Speaking exclusively to Player HD, Turner said: “We’ve had a real high number of candidates who are interested in the position here at Chesterfield for obvious reasons.

“We’re a very good club, you look at the stadium and the achievements over the last few years and it’s an ideal job for somebody.

“Ashley and I have been all over the north and the midlands meeting people and talking to them. The candidates applied through agents and e-mails, and we compiled a list.

“We looked at the list, and ticked a number of people off who we’d like to speak to, we’ve spoken to them this week and we’ve come to a decision, and we’re hoping to get something over the line after the weekend.”

Earlier this week, Carson issued the criteria that the successful applicant would need to meet, and with such a high level of interest the decision has not been an easy one.

“It’s not an easy process,” Turner said “there are a lot of good candidates, there’s always pros and cons for everybody who applies for the managerial position, but we feel the person that has come out on top is the right person at this time for this
club.

“We’re looking for somebody who is young, ambitious and has got some coaching record, and wants the position to enhance his own position in football.

“We want somebody to come here and do extremely well and take this club to the highest position that we can achieve and we want somebody who can be successful here and bring that into the club.

“I think that the person who will eventually get the position will fit that criteria.

“We didn’t want somebody that’s managed for a long period of time and had five or six jobs and sees this as another position and wanted to do well obviously.

“But we wanted somebody fresh and who’s up for it and is enthusiastic, with good knowledge of the game, good experience of the game and up for the fight.”

Turner also confirmed what the new manager’s targets will be.

He added: “The next manager has after tomorrow, 19 games to try and keep us in League One and that’s the target for him.

“Then after that it’s to rebuild on the recruitment side of everything that’s required.”

Both Turner and Carson have been keeping in regular contact with the club’s owner Dave Allen throughout the whole process.

Turner said: “He’s still involved and he’s got the interests of the club at heart.

“Ashley and I are in contact with Dave most days, and on this situation he’s said to us both to go out and interview candidates and come back with the answers from them and our feelings and our thoughts.

“We sat down and discussed with him the candidate that we feel is the right person for the position at this time.”

Finally, Turner expressed his thanks to both Danny Wilson and Chris Morgan who departed the club last weekend.

He said: “I’d like to thank Danny and Chris for their efforts with the club over the last 12 months.

“It’s always a shame when people leave, but that’s football and we have to move on.”
