REPORT: Dennis and Mitchell Secure Reserves Win

24 January 2017

A Kristian Dennis penalty and a superb Reece Mitchell goal, were enough for Chesterfield reserves to defeat Notts County 2-0 at the Proact.

The win extended their unbeaten run in the Central League Cup group stage to three matches, following the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on January 3, and last week's 2-2 draw with Shrewsbury Town.

And it was the Spireites who started the brighter of the two teams, with Ricky German winning possession deep in the County half and advancing into the penalty area, he looked to pull the back to on-running Dennis, but he was denied a route on goal by two defenders.

At the other end Tamar Clayton-Naute easily dispossessed Derek Daly just inside the Chesterfield half, before firing a left footed effort over the cross bar, while right back Wes Atkinson also shot over Lloyd Allinson's goal from the edge of the penalty area.

In the 22nd minute the visitors came the closest to breaking the deadlock with Alex Howes and Clayton-Naute combining down the right flank, Clayton-Naute then sent a cross over which reached the unmarked Remaye Campbell who somehow headed wide from inside the six-yard box.

Meanwhile at the other end, Mitchell easily beat Atkinson before squaring the ball to Joe Rowley who appeared to have tap in, only to be denied by a last ditch tackle from Harry Bugg.

If the first half was a pretty even affair, then the second half was one-way traffic, with the home side quickly settling into their stride.

German saw an effort blocked on the edge of the area, before Mitchell was played through on goal by a superb pass from Angel, as the winger entered the penalty area, he was bundled over by Cobain, leaving the referee no alternative but to award a penalty. Dennis then converted from the spot via the right hand post.

The Spireites came close again in the 61st minute, when a neat passing move involving Jack Brownell and German saw Dennis through on goal, only this time he was denied by a fine Scott Loach block.

Reserve team coach Ritchie Humphreys then made a triple substitution, with Jake Beesley, Angel and Dennis replaced by Iffy Ofoegbu, Owen Darwent and Charlie Wakefield, and all three were heavily involved in the remainder of the game, as the Spireites looked to increase their advantage.

German went close in the 86th minute when he shot wide after Wakefield's through ball, before Mitchell capped off an eye-catching display by running through the County defence and slotting the ball past Loach to complete the victory.
