Chesterfield slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Crewe Alexandra with both goals coming in the first half.
It was an improved second-half performance from the Spireites but they were unable to find a way back into the game.
With Ian Evatt suffering an injury in Saturday’s defeat at Stevenage, manager Jack Lester handed a place to Robbie Weir who was missing at the weekend due to illness.
Crewe took a seventh minute lead when Chris Porter found himself in plenty of space on the left wing and delivered a low cross which appeared to be turned into his own net by Jerome Binnom-Williams, under pressure from Chris Dagnall.
Soon after, Jak McCourt had Chesterfield’s first effort of note, sending a 20-yard shot narrowly wide.
Joe Rowley then had a shot blocked inside the area and the loose ball was collected by Weir whose long-range effort went just over.
The visitors extended their lead in the 26th minute when Charlie Kirk’s shot from a tight angle took a deflection on its way into the net.
Chris O’Grady put a header on target but it was no problem for keeper Ben Garratt.
Top scorer Kristian Dennis then threatened on the right-hand side of the area and his shot was blocked by a defender who turned the ball wide.
Weir, who was clearly struggling, made way in the 35th minute with Conor Dimaio taking his place in midfield.
Dennis also fired straight at Garratt with an effort from the edge of the area while O’Grady put a shot on the turn wide.
In the latter stages of the half, Jake Eastwood made a fine save from Dagnall, diving to his right to turn the ball round the post.
Early in the second half, Dimaio saw his firm drive blocked.
Then, from an Andy Kellett cross, Rowley’s diving header hit Dennis, who was on the ground.
Rowley then fired in a shot which appeared to be deflected wide, but the referee awarded a goal-kick.
Rowley’s driven cross was met by Dennis who was unable to keep his header down.
Former Spireite Jordan Bowery posed a threat after coming on as a substitute. He burst into the area after getting on the end of a long ball before blasting his effort wide and then had a low shot parried by Eastwood.
The final effort of the match fell to Dennis whose shot was saved by Garratt after a lay-off from substitute Diego De Girolamo.
