REPORT: Nouble Hat Trick Helps to See Off Spireites

26 August 2017

Chesterfield let a half-time lead given by Chris O'Grady slip away as Newport striker Frank Nouble bagged a hat-trick plus an assist for Padraig Amond to turns things right around.

To add to Chesterfield's woes, Bradley Barry picked up a nasty looking injury which seems set to sideline him for a while.

Gary Caldwell selected the same eleven that beat Port Vale last week meaning new season-long loanee Andy Kellett was on the bench. Keeper Tommy Lee made his 400th career League appearance whilst County skipper Joss Labadie is the man who picked up a long suspension for biting Ollie Banks at The Proact a couple of years ago.

After much criticism of the Rodney Parade playing surface over the last couple of years, new grass greeted County's first home match of the season as they looked to bounce back from their midweek 5-1 Carabao Cup loss at Leeds United.

It didn't take Kellett long to make his Spireites bow; Barry and Labadie came together, it was adjudged to have been a foul by the Chesterfield man who, after a long delay, was stretchered off with a splint on his right leg.

Prior to the injury, the game had been played at a furious pace with the ball travelling rapidly between boxes but without any clear cut chances but straight after the delay Reece Cole hit the free-kick to Labadie whose hear needed to be saved by Lee.

But it was Spireites who took the lead when Scott Wiseman, switched from left back to right after the injury, got the better of Nouble in an advanced position to deliver a perfect cross for O'Grady to hit home from six yards to open his account for Chesterfield.

Cole hit a free-kick just over and Padraig Amond hit the post after some sublime skill only for Jordan Sinnott to match that magic and see the woodwork come into play again.

Nouble and Mark O'Brien both had openings, the former from close in and the latter from 25 yards in the seven minutes of stoppage time and it was the home side that didn't want the half-time whistle to blow.

Newport came out of the blocks quickly and on 55 levelled when Robbie Weir's cross field pass was easily intercepted by Nouble who atoned for his earlier error in style with a 25 yard stunner.

The hosts, buoyed by an enthusiastic following, extended their lead when Nouble looped a header over Lee from a Dan Butler cross and the hat-trick home man then slipped through a hesitant defence to tee up Amond to end the rout on 82.

What started so well ended in disappointment for Chesterfield who slipped to their second away loss of the season as well as losing Barry to injury.
