Two second half goals saw the youth team suffer a frustrating defeat to Oldham Athletic at the Proact this afternoon.
Chesterfield started strongly and enjoyed the lion share of the possession, Iffy Ofoegbu was looking dangerous on the right and Charlie Wakefield, who has been involved with the first team, looked bright early on.
The first attempt on goal came on 22 minutes, after Owen Darwent fed Josh Tipping through, the striker drove towards goal and tried to arrow the ball into the bottom corner but the ‘keeper smartly diverted it behind.
Oldham then responded immediately and came close themselves through first team manager John Sheridan’s son Jay Sheridan, who forced Brad Jones into a save low to his right.
Jones again had to be at his best when Ryan Leonard powered in a shot from 12 yards out and the keeper showed great reflexes to push the ball up and away from goal. While Jay Smith headed over the bar from Wakefield’s corner right at the death.
The Spireites started the second half well and came close to taking the lead 15 minutes into the second half.
Darwent did well to rob the ball off a defender and Chesterfield were two versus two. Darwent squared it across to Jack Brownell who thought he had a tap in but for an excellent last ditch interception, took the ball away from the midfielder.
It was the away side who took the lead on 65 minutes from courtesy of a stunning curling free-kick after Jay Smith’s foul.
They doubled their lead minutes later when Leonard turned Ronaldo Brown’s cut back into the bottom corner to give the young Spireites a mountain to climb.
It was almost three but for Jones who pulled off a fine save to palm away Mason Fawns’ effort.
The Spireites responded well to the set back and created some half chances. Dylan Hand had a low free-kick well saved with 20 minutes to go as Chesterfield put Oldham under a bit of pressure, though they were unable to find a way back into the game.
