Chesterfield’s U12s are this morning heading to Dortmund, Germany to take part in the prestigious Golden Goal Fruhjahrs Cup.
It’s a huge tournament to be involved in, and the Spireites are one of 66 teams taking part!
On the trip, lead coach for the foundation phase, Darren Molloy said: “There are some big names taking part, in our group we’ve got dutch side Vitesse Arnhem and St Pauli of the Bundesliga II, along with some local semi-professional teams.
“The format is that we play our games on Saturday, and then you are graded off into a competition on Sunday, so it will be good for us to see if can we get to the group and how we do against the likes of Vitesse, and possibly even Olympique Marseille and Lyon on Sunday.”
The trip follows on the success of the U11s who won the Mayo Cup in Ireland last month, and Molloy wants to see the academy’s proud record continue this weekend.
He added: “When our teams have gone away recently we’ve had a lot of success, the boys all show a good mentality to win and they socialise really well and get a lot out of it.
“There’s only been one tournament where our teams haven’t come away with a trophy which is brilliant for the lads to have that memory and silverware.”
