Spireites Scoop Point at Oldham

Chesterfield picked up a point and broke their streak of losses with a 0-0 away result and a clean sheet at Oldham Athletic.

Goal-less at the break, Billy McKay came closest to cracking the tie after the interval as his low shot scuffed the outside of the post, but the Spireites went on to earn their second clean sheet of the season and claim a point.

Danny Wilson made four changes to the side that lost to AFC Wimbledon last week with Conor Wilkinson coming in for Jay O’Shea to partner Ched Evans up front. There were also places for Tom Anderson, Connor Dimaio and Dan Gardner.

There was very little to separate the two sides in terms of chances and possession with the Spireites arguably having the better of the first half and Oldham the better of the second.

Gboly Ariyibi was denied twice by keeper Connor Ripley. First in the 19th minute after he saved a deflected shot and then he superbly saved the American’s volley after he was found by Dion Donohue. Ariyibi was also denied a goal when Peter Clarke cleared off the line.

Ryan Fulton wasn’t to be outdone by his opposite number as he pulled off a couple of decent stops. Marc Klok tried to catch the Chesterfield defence out with a low corner cut back to Billy McKay, who arrowed in a shot from close range but Fulton was down quickly to turn the ball away from danger.

Fulton then pulled off a brilliant save on the hour-mark when substitute Lee Croft’s beautiful curling effort from 25 yards was heading for the top corner but the Spireites keeper was more than equal to it.

Strikers Evans and Wilkinson linked up well on occasions. Wilkinson crossed for Evans and he was able to set up Ariyibi with a cut back, but the chance came to nothing. Evans then went close when he turned Gary Liddle's scuffed shot with a nice back-heal but the keeper was alert to it.

Former Spireites midfielder Ollie Banks came on in the last five minutes to a warm reception from the Chesterfield fans.

The point sees Chesterfield secure 14th place in League One with Northampton Town visiting the Proact next Saturday.
