The Spireites battled toe-to-toe with their league-leading opponents in the first half of Saturday's game, but after the break the Iron proved just too strong for the hosts.
The 49th-minute Josh Morris strike turned the tide in Scunthorpe's favour and the Spireites rarely looked like wrestling back control of the fixture - leading to a fourth straight league defeat.
"Everyone's down, obviously," said Dan Gardner to PlayerHD after the game. "We've not won a game for quite a bit but we need to stick together and only we can change that: the management team and everyone in the dressing room."
After the game, Danny Wilson had asked for more heart and responsibility to be shown by his players, and it was a sentiment agreed with by Gardner.
"The manager's right, 100%," he said. "We do need to man up and start winning games as a team. There's only us in there and we're the only ones who can change it so hopefully it starts again now.
"We need to put it right on the training field. We know it can come, look at the start of the season when we got good results with good performances. We've shown what we can do we just need to get ourselves together and do that."
Striker Ched Evan was back in the starting line-up at the weekend, but was given few chances to show what he can do, and Gardner says the team have the big players required to get them out of their current hole.
"It's a massive boost [to have Evans back] but we need to give him the chances and create them for him. He's not the only big player, we have a lot. There's Jay O'Shea, Gboly Ariyibi, at the back Sam Hird's been class, Dion Donohue, Jon Nolan, they've all been good players - we just need to grind some results out.
"We need to pull each other through, get one result and that will turn into a few."
