With the older youth team players rested after the FA Youth Cup victory, a young squad lost 2-0 at home to York City on Saturday.
However, academy manager Mark Smith was positive with how his young charges had competed against more experienced opposition at Clay Cross.
He said: "The lads were given the chance to show what they could do against older players and as a rule they stood up to it and did well, it was level at half time and it was only when they started to run out of steam that York took control of the game.
"George Carey especially laid down a marker and played well - but having shown their abilities they now need to show they can play that way consistently."
