The Spireites scored a penalty and hit the woodwork twice in their attempts to get out of a two-goal hole, but lost 2-1 at Fleetwood Town as the losing run continued.

After Jay O'Shea had missed a wonderful opportunity the hosts were ahead when Amari'i Bell finished off a move from close range as the Cod Army went in ahead at the break.

The Spireites were looking positive in their hunt for a leveller, but a Fleetwood break saw substitute Victor Nirennold slide a second home at the back post, before Jay O'Shea pulled one back from the penalty spot after Reece Mitchell was fouled.

Fleetwood Town controlled the opening exchanges and forced an early save out of Lloyd Allinson, making his first EFL start, six minutes in when Amari’i Bell pounced on a teasing cross from close range.

The hosts came close again two minutes later as David Ball fired a low freekick just wide of the left hand post from 20 yards out.

The first opening for the Spireites came after some good work by O’Shea down the middle, going past two defenders and sliding a ball through to Kristian Dennis but the forward dragged his shot wide.

Chesterfield should have taken the lead on 21 minutes when Dion Dononhue’s cross caused all sorts of problems. Dennis looked like he had an opening until he appeared to be brought down but the ball fell kindly to O’Shea who had a clear goal but blasted the ball over the bar.

It was Fleetwood though who opened the scoring five minutes later when Ball was able to cut the ball back across for Bell to smash the ball into the roof of the net from six yards out.

Danny Wilson’s men tried to respond instantly and O’Shea had another decent opportunity when he picked up the ball outside the box and tried to bend the ball into the top corner and wasn’t too far away, but the ball sailed wide.

Fleetwood reacted well as Ashley Hunter then did well on the left-hand side for Fleetwood to cross for Ball who poked the it just wide as the Cod Army ended the half well.

The Spireites came out on the front foot in the second half with Gboly Ariyibi becoming more involved. The winger showed his class out wide with a dipping cross that clipped the top of the crossbar just before the hour mark.

Uwe Rosler’s team responded and went straight down the other end with a swift move which ended in Ball coming close with a fine effort with the outside of his boot.

The game was stretched and end-to-end at this point. The Spireites broke forward and were applying pressure. Reece Mitchell managed to test former Spireites 'keeper Alex Cairns with a low driven shot.

The away side’s pressure came to nothing and they were punished on the 62nd minute when Hunter's cross was turned in by substitute Nirennbold who hooked the ball past the diving Allinson.

Again, Chesterfield responded positively and Dennis came close after the ball ping-ponged in the area and his header deflected for a corner.

They were then handed a route back into the game a minute later when Mitchell was brought down in the box after a driving run into the area. The spot-kick was converted excellently by the composed O’Shea who gave the 'keeper no chance.

There was a first team debut for Jake Beesley who replaced Dennis with just under 20 minutes to go. He had a glorious opportunity when Mitchell’s cross came towards him in the box but he lost his footing as the ball got to his feet.

As the snow started to fall, the Spireites piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, putting a series of crosses into the Fleetwood area.

They then conjured up a nice passing move which saw Ariyibi with the ball out wide, he knocked it back towards Donohue who slid in Liam O’Neil who came agonisingly close as his first-time shot rattled the crossbar and went behind in the 89th minute.

The Spireites were unable to score a leveller as they stretched their league run of losses to eight games.
