After Thursday's proposal to alter the current Football League structure, Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner gave the following response.
"I would firstly like to say that this proposal came totally out of the blue. CEOs from other clubs contacted me to ask if I was aware of such a plan as they were as surprised as I was when I heard the news.
I have to ask why there is talk of changing the format at this time, especially as there are other pressing matters that need to be addressed. The Elite Player Performance Plan, for example, is costing way above what is necessary.
I am in support of changes if they improve the game but my big concern is that the Premier League clubs are looking at ways of enabling their fringe players to gain experience of playing competitive football. Is that what is behind the proposal to add another division?"
