The Spireites youth team lost 2-0 away to Lincoln City this lunchtime - with many of the older Chesterfield players away with the reserve side.
Academy manager Mark Smith took charge of the side in Lincolnshire and explained that the result wasn't the main purpose of the outing.
"I wasn't looking at it with too much of a critical eye," he said. "The main objective was to get back into it after the Easter break where the players had a couple of days off.
"The time away was deserved after a couple of good results in the last ten days with some good performances. Really, it was the chance to open the players' pipes and get their legs going again.
"The game was on a 3G pitch, which always tricky as it makes for a more lively game, and I felt that overall the performance was okay."
With no Saturday match for the youth team coming up at the end of the week, the challenge of a Midlands powerhouse instead awaits.
Smith said: "We don't have a league game this weekend but we do have a game with Nottingham Forest on Friday morning, against their under 18 side.
"That will be more-or-less our strongest team that we'll take down for that game. That's one for the lads to look forward as they will come up against a strong team."
