The Spireites reserves yesterday recorded a resounding 3-0 away win over a strong Rotherham United in their latest Final Third Development League match.
Goals from Jordan Slew, Rai Simons and Jake Orrell saw Chesterfield to a comprehensive win at Rotherham's Roundwood training ground.
Ritchie Humphreys has been leading the side for much of this season, and took an even more active role on Wednesday, lacing his boots up to also play from the start.
"It was an excellent result, and an excellent performance with a mix of players," Humprheys commented on the game. "Down the spine of the team there was experience with the likes of Chappie (Aaron Chapman), Charlie Raglan, Laurence Maguire and myself - then with Jordan Slew up top.
"Then around that there were young professionals and youth team players, all playing against some established senior players from Rotherham. I thought the overall performance was top drawer.
"It was coupled with the result, which included three fantastic goals and a clean sheet - playing some tremendous football and working hard on a bobbly pitch, I couldn't be more proud of the younger players."
With several of the Spireites again impressing, Humprheys spoke about the first team opportunities which could arise after strong reserve performances.
He said: "The reserves are there to make sure the players are match-fit and ready to be called upon when the chance is there to make the step to the first team.
"This helps them to keep banging on the door, while some of the younger players will be looking to get professional contracts and this helps them to play in a team that is going well.
"To score three goals, keep a clean sheet and play really effectively on the counter attack was great. Everyone's learning, we're working hard and we have some very talented young players.
The result leaves the Spireites just a couple of points off Notts County at the top of the league, with a a game in hand, and Humphreys is keen to keep the side on the same winning route.
"It's not about looking at the league so much, it's about looking along the path that we're going along. We've got a game every week now, so we'll play them and see where we are," he said.
