Chesterfield stretched their unbeaten run to five games on Saturday with a 1-0 away win against Southend and Liam O’Neil said his side are remaining focused despite the upsurge in results.
The former West Brom man praised goal-scorer Lee Novak and the rest of the squad after grabbing all three points and a clean sheet at Roots Hall on Saturday.
“That’s his 14th goal now which is great for him and hopefully he can keep on building on it," said O'Neil. "Tom (Anderson), Hirdy (Sam Hird) Dion (Donohue) were brilliant as well.
"Lids (Gary Liddle) did well in the midfield so it’s something to build on, but we can’t get carried away. Some results went our way but we have just got to keep doing our own thing and take it into next weekend.”
The win was Chesterfield’s eighth victory on the road this season and the defender praised the character of his side on the Essex coast.
“You can see there is a spirit about the boys," he said. "They don’t give up and they just keep going at it, which proved the point today.
"Fair play to all the boys, they put in a great shift and now we get back on the motorway and get home and prepare for next Saturday.”
O’Neil, speaking to PlayerHD, was full of compliments and acknowledged centre-back Tom Anderson’s performances since arriving on-loan at the club.
“He has done really well but he keeps saying he's also looking at it game by game which is good to see from a young lad. Next weekend he has got to do it again and keep looking for consistency and hopefully keep performing well.”
Walsall are the next opponents for Chesterfield on Saturday at the Proact Stadium and O’Neil said the mood in the camp is good.
“Today we have come away with a really important three points and a clean sheet. All the boys are buzzing, we need to build on it game by game and onto next week and hopefully we can do it again against Walsall.”
