Banks: "We’re not looking down"

8 March 2016

Spireites midfielder Ollie Banks spoke about the team’s growing confidence after extending their unbeaten run to five games with a 1-0 away win over promotion chasers Southend United.

Lee Novak scored his 14th goal of the season late on to secure another three points on the road for Danny Wilson’s side against difficult opposition at Roots Hall.

Banks said: “It’s a great win. It’s a tough place to come and we’ve not had much luck coming down here in recent years but we put that right today with a great result.

“If you go in the dressing room now, you can see what it means to everyone, you can see at the end what it means to everyone, we’re just delighted with the points.

“We came to win the game. There was no plan to come here for a draw. We’ve got massive confidence boost coming in from the last three or four weeks, so why couldn’t we come here and get all three points?

“We’re not looking down, we’re looking to get as many wins as possible until the end of the season and see where that can take us.”

The 24-year-old has impressed in midfield for the Spireites recently and nearly added to the list of recent wonder goals with a curling shot from the right hand side, as well as assisting the winning goal.

He added: “I had four or five shots, a couple went over and the 'keeper saved a few but as long as I was able to play Lee (Novak) through at the end, that’s more important to me.

“I saw Jay (O’Shea) on the ball and made a run forwards. I’ve actually gone for the ball down the line but he’s played it into my feet, which I wasn’t expecting.

Luckily the defender managed to put it back into my path and I’ve put Lee in and once he was in on goal there was only one place it was going.”

Banks also praised his fellow midfielders after an excellent performance, he commented: “Lidds (Gary Liddle) does a great job, he gets us ticking and breaks things up really well. He helps the defence out and sets us up on attacks.

"Connor (Dimaio) is great to play with as well, I feel like we’re bouncing off each other quite well.”
