On the day of English football's pinnacle, the Spireites second-string earned a 0-0 draw at Buxton, the highest ground in the English football pyramid. There were familair faces in the Buxton squad with Derek Niven starting in midfield and former youth team striker George Milner making it onto the bench, while the Spireites started with a squad made up mainly of young and fringe players.
Buxton should have been ahead after 15 minutes when Niall Doran was fed in space in the Spireites' six-yard box, odds-on to score, the ball got caught in his feet and the visitors managed to clear.
Ritchie Humphreys tested Buxton 'keeper Jan Budtz's palms with a strong half-volley, with Humphreys then swinging a free-kick in that Laurence Maguire firmly headed over the bar.
After half an hour the Bucks went close through Bradley Grayson, who was fed past the Spireites backline and with time shot first time, but saw his shot saved by the 'keeper's legs.
A good Spireites move saw Jake Beesley break the offside trap, find Kristian Dennis with a ball back and while the striker tricked his way past the first defender a second was able to intercept and clear.
The closing moments of the half saw Fabrice Bembo-Leta miscue a shot in the area when he had time and space to connect better, while for the Spireites Dennis shot low and hard but his effort went half a yard wide of the Buxton far post.
Half time and the Spireites fans were given a first chance to see summer signing Jon Nolan as he made his return from a thigh injury for the second 45 minutes, the midfielder soon putting a freekick over the bar.
Dennis had a huge chance to break the deadlock on 53 minutes, profitting from Reece Mitchell's excellent work, but seeing his close-range shot blocked by the 'keeper.
On 74 minutes, Humphreys fired a half-volley wide after snatching at an effort in the box, while Bucks substitute Boumba's scuffed effort was happily gathered by Spireites substitute 'keeper Ben Killip.
Humphreys's late dink cleared the 'keeper and the bar, while Donohue's late effort was close but not close enough as the game ended goal-less.
