Midfielder Ollie Banks departed the Proact Stadium this week as he was released from his contract in order to join Oldham Athletic.
Having started the first two pre-season matches for the Spireites the timing of the move was perhaps surprising, and first-team coach Chris Morgan explained the situation.
"Probably from Ollie's point of view we couldn't guarantee him first-team football," Morgan said. "Jon Nolan's come in, there's the team captain Gary Liddle, you've got young Connor (Dimaio) and with Ollie there were four midfield players.
"It meant he wasn't guaranteed a start, Oldham have come in for him and he sees it as a good move forward for him, and possibly a chance for him to go and be in the starting 11.
"Since me and the gaffer came in January, Ollie's done well for us. He's been a real good part of the group, he put in some real good performances for us last season to help us stay in the division.
"We thank Ollie for that and we wish him well for the future."
The Spireites have already completed six signings during the summer and Morgan gave his view on whether any more will follow after Banks's departure.
"Hopefully they will. I think the people above us will answer those questions.
"It's always about balancing. We have brought some other players in, so naturally other players have to move on."
