In a unique partnership, Chesterfield FC have agreed to sponsor the Sheffield & District Junior League for the next five years.
The deal with the largest junior league in Europe has been ratified by The FA and it is believed to be the first time that a professional football club has sponsored a junior league.
Liam Sutcliffe, head of Chesterfield FC Player Progression Pathway, said: “This is very exciting news, allowing us to help support grassroots football in the local area. The majority of clubs in the Chesterfield area play in the Sheffield & District Junior League and there are around 12,500 youngsters playing in the league.
"We are delighted that we can now start to put in place a number of projects over the next five years that can help as many grassroots clubs, coaches and children as possible.”
As part of the agreement, high profile junior events will be staged at the Proact Stadium. Sutcliffe explained: “The first project we are working on is the under-16s cup final. We are also planning one of the largest five-a-side football tournaments in Europe, which will be fantastic for everyone involved.”
Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner added: “This agreement provides further evidence of our commitment to the recruitment and development of young footballers. We are delighted to have formed a partnership with the Sheffield & District Junior League, which will benefit both parties over the next five years.”
