For Lee Novak, the 7-1 thumping of Shrewsbury Town on Saturday won’t be forgotten in a hurry as he hit his first professional hat-trick to fire the Spireites to a new year victory.
On-loan forward Novak, who also scored in the 1-1 draw against Coventry last Monday, now has eight goals for the Spireites and admitted his relief at breaking his hat-trick duck.
“I’ve been close a few times and I thought it wasn’t going to be after the 'keeper made a good save but luckily for me I’ve got it. With the first goal I thought I'd just try and get a good connection on it and luckily for me it flew into the top corner.
"I’ve always been good at penalties so naturally I wanted to take the first one but Jay (O’Shea) is the taker so after he’d gone off I took the second penalty and stuck it away.
"I’m more than happy to get the three goals but more importantly we got the win.”
Personal accolades aside, Novak praised the overall performance of the team as they put smiles back on the faces of Spireites everywhere.
He said: “From start to finish we showed the fans what we can do and I don’t think Shrewsbury were in the game, from the first whistle to the end we put the game to bed. We’ve been threatening that for a while.”
Danny Wilson has made a fantastic start to life as manager of Chesterfield and Novak is full of praise for the impact that he has made since his arrival.
“The gaffer has come in and been brilliant. I think we’ll improve now, he was pleased with us last week, we were unlucky not to win with Coventry scoring a good free-kick but he’s given us freedom to go and play and I think we did that.”
The Spireites will be looking to continue their unbeaten start under Wilson when they travel to Rochdale at the weekend and Novak is confident that the run can continue.
“Rochdale will be a tough game but we played well against Coventry and won on Saturday so we’ve got confidence for next week.”
