The Spireites earned a perfect pep as they secured just a fourth home league win of the season with a 3-1 result over Crewe Alexandra.

The Spireites got off to a dream start as within quarter of an hour they were two goals to the good.

First Sylvan Ebanks-Blake volleyed home Connor Dimaio's cross before some terrific Gboly Ariyibi wingplay put the ball on a plate for Lee Novak to double the lead from close range. Crewe got themselves back in the game before the half was out with Zoumana Bakayogo scoring from 11 yards.

On his home debut the impressive Dimaio scored his first ever Football League goal when he exchanged passes with Ebanks-Blake and swept home with a cool finish that would seal the points against an energetic Alex side.

Manager Danny Wilson made a number of changes to his starting line-up. Skipper Gary Liddle started a three-match ban following his sending off at Colchester in midweek. Dion Donohue, Jay O'Shea and Mani Dieseruvwe also missed out, dropping down to the substitutes bench. Declan John, signed on loan from Cardiff City, came in for his debut and there were recalls for Ebanks-Blake, Novak and Chris Herd.

Crewe threatened early on when Bakayogo made a darting run towards the penalty area, winning a free-kick around 25 yards out. Skipper David Fox took the free-kick and put it just over the bar.

The Spireites scored with their first effort on goal when Dimaio's cross from the right was met by Ebanks-Blake whose volley went in off Ben Garratt's right-hand post.

Tommy Lee came to Chesterfield's rescue with a fine save to keep out Marcus Haber's thumping header.

Chesterfield extended their lead in the 12th minute. Ariyibi did well to beat the full-back on the right-hand side before delivering a low cross which found Novak who  tapped in from just a yard out for his seventh goal in eight games.

Manager Wilson was forced to make a 19th minute change when Herd picked up a knock and was replaced by O'Shea.

There was a let off for the Spireites when Saunders was put through by Bradden Inman, but the young striker dragged his shot wide from the right-hand side of the area.

It proved to be a temporary reprieve as the visitors pulled a goal back when Inman, after having his shot beaten away by Lee, found Bakayogo who drilled a low shot into the net.

Bakayogo had sight of goal soon after the re-start when a Jamie Jones cross picked him out, but he put his header over.

Dimaio, who made his first appearance for the Spireites in midweek, capped a confident home debut with a goal in the 56th minute. After exchanging passes with Ebanks-Blake on the edge of the area, he produced a confident finish to beat Garratt.

Inman shot well over from the edge of the area at the start of a good spell for the visitors.

Haber had an angled shot saved by Lee at his near post and substitute Callum Ainley then played the ball across the face of the goal, but there was no-one to applying the finishing touch.

Wilson made a second change with Dieseruvwe coming on in place of Ebanks-Blake.

Ollie Banks tried his luck from distance with a shot which went wide of the target.

Lee was quickly off his line to make an important save with his legs as Oliver Turton threatened on the right-hand side of the area.

There looked to be an opening for the Spireites when O'Shea broke away and tried to find the unmarked Dieseruvwe, but his attempted pass was diverted.

O'Shea was involved again when he received the ball on the edge of the area and fired over.

Haber went close for Crewe late on, heading a fraction wide as the Spireites collected their win.
