Connor Fowler’s stoppage-time freekick secured a point for the Spireites youth team as they drew 1-1 with Burton Albion in their EFL Youth Alliance fixture at Clay Cross.

Fowler’s second-half effort cancelled out Burton’s opener, which came just minutes after visiting keeper Callum Hawkins saved Joel Rowley’s penalty - after a Burton defender had pulled Luke Francis’ shirt.

It was the home side who made the brighter start and Joel Phillips went close to opening the scoring after being put through on goal before being thwarted by Hawkins.

Shortly afterwards, a Rowley corner found Dylan Hand, who timed his jump superbly before seeing his header cleared off the line by a Burton defender.

Burton’s Reece Hutchinson fired a shot wide of Dylan Parkin’s goal, before neat interplay down the Spireites right involving Rowley and Aaron Stewart saw the latter’s cross just evade the on-running Phillips.

Before the break, the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the game and went close to taking the lead when a long ball was chested down into the path of Joe Sbarra by Joe Davies, but fortunately for the Spireites, Sbarra’s half-volley went wide of the target.

Another Brewers attack saw a neat passing move involving Jack Hallahan, Hutchinson and Sbarra find Burton captain Dylan Garnett, who shot over the bar from 18 yards out.

Garnett was in the thick of the action moments later when he was denied what looked a certain goal by a superb tackle from Jay Smith, the ball then found its way to Sbarra, whose first-time strike was palmed away by Parkin.

Following the re-start, Garnett’s long-range effort was dealt with comfortably by Parkin, while at the other end Rowley headed straight at Hawkins from a Charlie Wakefield free-kick.

Defences remained very much on top and remained so until there was a long break in proceedings, when Burton defender Tom Hammerton suffered a serious injury and had to be taken off on a stretcher.

Chesterfield then squandered a great chance to take the lead, when the referee adjudged a Burton defender to have pulled Francis’ shirt inside the penalty area. From the resulting spot-kick, Rowley saw his effort palmed away by Hawkins. Rowley was made to pay for his miss minutes later, when Burton opened the scoring.

But it was Fowler who spared his blushes, when his 40-yard free-kick found the back of the net and gave the Spireites a share of the spoils.
