Last Friday lunchtime the Spireites youth team started their Youth Alliance Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Notts County. For the hosts, playing at Clay Cross, it was a case of not being able to turn possession into goals, as while Ricky German gave Chesterfield the lead, a defnsive mix-up allowed County to equalise.
Next up in the competition, the Spireites face Wrexham, with a full list of youth team fixtures for the season viewable here.
"I thought we had the chances to win it," explained academy manager Mark Smith. "We created good situations, but we didn't really fire on the all cylinders we could have. We weren't put under the cosh defensively, except for their goal when we failed to deal with a ball.
"There's definitely some progress from the team over the early stage of the season. We've got a decent team, we just need to make sure we're prepared properly for every game.
"On Friday we were always the better team without being able to turn good positions into the goals we could have scored."
