Dan Gardner praised the quality that runs throughout the Spireites’ side after their 2-0 win at home to Walsall sent them top of the Sky Bet League 1 table for 24 hours.
The home side looked to be heading for their second draw of the season until a Ched Evans brace blew the hosts towards the three points, but Gardner insisted that by keeping things tight they were always in with a shout.
He said: “We always knew that if we stay in the game then we have got the ability up top and in the midfield to create a goal.
“You have seen with Ched how good is he with the ball and he has scored a goal from nothing really, it was a great goal and then the second has just put it to bed really.
“We made ourselves compact, the gaffer has been teaching us how to stay in games and if we stay in a game then we are always in with a chance to nick a goal at anytime.”
The Spireites have had some top goalscorers in recent years, including the likes of Leon Clarke, Eoin Doyle and Lee Novak, and Gardner told PlayerHD where Evans ranks among them.
“They are all goal scorers aren't they? They all score goals and up to now Ched has been flying and hopefully he continues to do that.
“Ched has got a great shot on him and a great finish, just like all the others have had and he is just the same really, he scores a lot of goals.”
Asked on life near the top of the table and how long the Spireites winning form could continue, Gardner praised the fans, of whom he said have been fantastic since his time at the club.
“The fans are absolutely massive to us, they have been great ever since I’ve been here and how loud is was, you could hear the roars.
“When we needed them because we weren't scoring they were still cheering us on, which is great and we need it every game.
“Being at the top makes it harder because you want to keep up the good work that you’ve done and want to win every game that you can.
“It is class to play, it is going well at the minute so we will just keep doing that and when we have our down days, which we will have, we just need to stick together and pull through."
