The Spireites youth team ran out 2-0 winners over their Oldham counterparts in midweek following two superb goals from Ricky German.
Despite playing a side featuring only one second-year player, Chesterfield performed well against a tough Oldham side and took the lead in the 44th minute when German collected a through pass before slotting past the keeper.
In the 68 minute, Chesterfield doubled their lead when, after collecting a Charlie Wakefield pass, German held off three players before swivelling and shooting from an angle to find the net.
Assistant professional development phase coach John Bilton was impressed with his team’s performance. He said: “We went into the game against a very difficult side to play against in terms of their good defending and pressing. However, we matched them with that and with the defending side, without difficulty.
“German got on the end of a through pass down the left side, cut inside and finished very calmly past the keeper at an angle, so that was it going in at half time.
“In the second half, there was not too much between the two sides, but we looked better going forward and we stuck at it. For the second goal, German got into the box and showed great composure and held off three players before producing a great finish. I must say it was one of the best goals I have ever seen at youth level."
Bilton felt it was a good experience for the younger members of the team. He added: “The players had a culture of hard work - both in terms of attacking and defending - and a 'never say die' attitude.
"It was good for the other younger players to come in. We had five players from the academy who experienced the culture of the youth programme, so they can now go away knowing what they can achieve.”
