The reserves missed out on a chance to win the Final Third Development League East Division title on Wednesday afternoon, suffering a 3-1 defeat at home to Notts County.
The Spireites went into the game knowing that a victory over their nearest rivals would see them clinch the title, but County produced a strong performance to take all three points. In an incident-packed last ten minutes, Connor Dimaio pulled a goal back, County keeper Roy Carroll was sent off, Jordan Slew had a penalty saved and the visitors scored a third goal!
County took the lead after 17 minutes when Montel Gibson clipped the ball over keeper Christian Dibble.
Rai Simons put an effort off-target and Davis Keillor-Dunn produced a strong run before firing in a shot which was parried by Roy Carroll.
Slew then had a long-range effort saved and also shot wide before County extended their lead just before the break when Mawouna Amevor made a fine solo run and beat Dibble with a fine finish.
Slew was in the thick of the action in the second half, firing wide soon after the re-start and then seeing a free-kick saved.
Martel Daswell replaced Simons and Curtis Morrison took over from Keillor-Dunn.
County sent on 42-year-old goalkeeper coach Kevin Pilkington as an outfield player, but he was soon to revert to his old role.
Dibble saved a long-range effort before Dimaio (83) pulled a goal back with a well-taken free-kick from a position out wide on the left, sending the ball into the far corner of the net.
In the 85th minute, Carroll was sent off for foul and abusive language and Pilkington, who had been playing at right-back, took over in goal.
Pilkington was soon called into action when Slew won a penalty after being fouled inside the area and the striker took the spot-kick himself but saw his effort saved by the veteran keeper.
Jason Banton completed the scoring in stoppage time following a powerful run and finish.
Chesterfield: Dibble, Beesley, Daly, Marshall, Maguire, Simons (Daswell), Dimaio, Milner, Slew, Orwell, Keillor-Dunn (Morrison).
