Manager Dean Saunders was very encouraged by the reserve team's performance in Tuesday afternoon's game at Scunthorpe United, which they won 3-1.
Rai Simons scored twice after the Spireites took a fifth minute lead from an own goal in the opening Final Third Development League Cup group match.
Saunders said: "There were some good performances, which was very pleasing. We were 3-0 up at half-time after scoring three great goals. Dion Donohue put over an in-swinging free-kick which forced them to score an own goal. It was a great delivery from Dion. Jake Orrell then put over a cross straight to Rai Simons, who scored with a great header. For the third goal, Rai cut inside and produced another good finish."
Saunders believes the return of the reserve team will be of great benefit to the youngsters. He said: "The long-term plan at the club is to bring young players through and combine them with experienced players. We had a chance to do that at Scunthorpe where our back four was Jake Beesley, Ritchie Humphreys, Laurence Maguire and Michael Onovwigun.
"Jake has been playing at right-back because we’re quite blessed with strikers in the squad and he’s doing really well there. Ritchie can organise and help bring the lads on as well. Michael is a midfielder who’s never played at centre-back before."
"The style of football we played is what I want and they will find it easier when they step up. We’ll also get the under-18s playing this way as well so that they also find it easier to step up through their age groups."
