Youth Team in Pools Draw

26 October 2015

The Chesterfield youth team were unable to win, but secured a 2-2 draw with Hartlepool United at Staveley on Saturday.

A goal behind at the break, Spireites striker Ricky German levelled matters within seconds of the restart. However, after taking the lead with ten minutes to go when Brad Holmes converted a corner, a similar fate fell for the hosts as Hartlepool equalised within a minute of the resulting kick-off.

Academy manager Mark Smith reflected on what he sees as recent progress for his squad: "We should have held on better after going in front but all-in-all I think it was a fair result.

"We went up there earlier in the season and got well beaten, they are one of the better teams in the league, so for us to respond like this was pleasing.

"You've got to be able to compete, and in the last couple of weeks we've shown that we can do that.

"We're still searching for consistency, and we are getting better in that regard, but that is very often the way with younger players like ours."
