In a Final Third Development League Cup group stage tie the Spireites lost 5-3 to Notts County in a pulsating match at the Proact Stadium.

County took the lead before the Spireites countered and raced into a 3-1 advantage, the Magpies then staged a turnaround of their own to claim a thrilling victory.

Byron Harrison went close with two early one-on-ones, one was lobbed wide while a second was into the chest of the quickly-out goalkeeper.

Despite the bright Spirietes start it was the visiting County who took the lead when Colby Bishop finished low in the box.

The home side were level within five minutes though as a good Rai Simons cross was perfect for the run of Harrison who stole past his marker to head home from six yards.

Half an hour in and Harrison could have grabbed his and the host's second with a header from a corner before Chesterfield did take the lead when Harrison's ball in was expertly volleyed home by Mani Dieseruvwe.

The run of goals continued in the first half as Dieseruvwe headed home a neat Donohue corner before County pulled themsleves back to within a goal as Spireites defender Liam Graham flicked a header into his own net to make it 3-2 before the break.

Three minutes into the second half and the spate of goals continued and Notts County levelled through Jimmy Spencer looping a header back towards goal, over Alex Cairns and into the net.

Amazingly, the Magpies were then ahead again through Lartey Sarpong who drilled home a low shot after some controlled build-up play from his attacking team-mates.

Powerful shots from Liam O'Neil and Dieseruvwe - searching for a hat-trick - threatened to get the home side level once more, but the next goal instead went to County when Atkinson finished clinically from 22 yards.

Dieseruvwe missed a point-blank header and then saw another nodded effort rebound off the bar as the Spireites searched for a second comeback in the closing stages that would never quite materialise.
