Brian Carey joined Chesterfield this week as Dean Saunders' assistant manager, and the new number two spoke about his arrival at the Proact Stadium.

Carey has previously worked with Saunders at Wrexham, Doncaster Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers and feels their relationship is a strong a productive one.

"I know how Dean works now," he said. "It started back at Wrexham when I was in charge there for a short spell. I brought Dean in as a striker coach, he came in and we've gotten along since then.

"He eventually got the job at Wrexham and asked me to help him. We went to Doncaster together and then onto Wolves - we just seem to work well together."

Carey arrives at Chesterfield after leaving his job working with the youth team at Blackburn Rovers, and the incoming assistant manager talked through how he came to be offered his role at the Proact.

"I was in employment up at Blackburn, though I might have been disappointed if I hadn't received a phone call, but at the time I wasn't too sure what was going to happen.

"Dean's had a job since [at Crawley] and worked with a lot of people, but when the phone call came around I was more than happy."

Despite enjoying his time with Blackburn, Carey explained that it was an easy decision to move to Chesterfield.

"Without a shadow of a doubt," said Carey. "I had a decent job at Blackburn doing the under 18 youth team job - and you'd look at that job in football and say it's very secure.

"I know Chris [Turner] from my time at Leicester when I played there and could see what's been happening here in the last few years and could see the progress that's been made.

"You can just look at the team here and how well they did last season - these are the reasons I left Blackburn. It's a good opportunity and hopefully we can continue with the good foundations put in by other people.

"I'm delighted to be here, it's taken a while to happen but I'm finally here and I'm really looking forward to it."

Brian Carey's first Chesterfield interview is available now on Spireites Player, with the second half of this written interview following next weekend.
