Chesterfield are set to sign keeper Alex Cairns, who has turned out for the club in pre-season.

Manager Dean Saunders revealed the news in an interview with Spireites Player HD after Tuesday night's 3-1 win at Ilkeston. He said: "Tommy (Lee) has had a few problems with his shoulder and Aaron (Chapman) has had both ankles reconstructed so I think we just need to cover ourselves a little bit. Alex is a good goalkeeper who is great with his feet and he'll sign a contract for six months."

Cairns was a free agent after being released by Leeds United at the end of last season. The 22-year-old, who came through the Leeds academy, made just one senior appearance during his time at Elland Road. He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Stalybridge Celtic.

Commenting on the Ilkeston match, Saunders said: "It was a good work-out for us. I thought we played well in patches in the first half. Ilkeston worked their socks off and tried to stop us playing. We got around the game really well.

"Sylvan (Ebanks-Blake) and Armand (Gnanduillet) were a handful in the first half and we cut through them at times in the second half. We've got some good young players with pace and power."

The Spireites play in a private practice match against Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday before completing their pre-season programme with a visit to Hartlepool United on Saturday.
