The Chesterfield first team squad this morning jetted-off to Portugal for a week-long training camp, with a friendly now confirmed for the squad at the end of the week.

Manager Dean Saunders has emphasised the importance of the squad having time together to bond and get to know each other, while also taking advantage of the opportunity for warm-weather training.

With the week planned out to make the most of the squad's physical and training time and with more social activities planned as well - the trip will culminate in a friendly at the training base with Portuguese second division side SC Olhanense.

Chesterfield had been trying to rubber stamp the fixture with the Olhão-based side since shoring up their travel plans and assistant manager Brian Carey expressed his pleasure now that the match is written in the travel diary.

He said: "We've been after this game for a while and we've managed to get the game confirmed for the end of the week, which is great.

"It gives the week more of a focus and we've got enough players to make this fixture more than worthwhile.

"By the time we play the game we'll have been back for two weeks so it's a game we'll want to do well in - not in terms of the result but in terms of what we're trying to do.

"We'll then be close to the competitive stage as the following week we'll be playing Hull and Burnley at home and I'm sure those games will be tough because we'll be getting ever-closer to the start of the season."
