After a busy schedule of back-to-back pre-season friendlies, manager Dean Saunders has now taken his squad to Portugal for a training camp. The Spireites started their pre-season programme with 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Derbyshire rivals Matlock Town and Buxton, and Saunders was happy with the results and the way they came about.
"There have been no injuries," he said. "That's the main thing and they've all got 45 minutes under them and I'm really pleased for them - we looked like a team out there.
"We've got a lot of good young players and good athletes as well, there are some big strong lads who can run and they can play as well.
Chesterfield have now left Blighty for the Algarve, where after a strenuous week of training the squad will square up to Portuguese side SC Olhanense on Friday.
"We've got a good game on Friday," explained the manager. "We'll build up now towards that game and everything we do wil be aimed towards that game. I'll get to know the players better as will my staff.
"We'll get together out there and get to know each other. I'll work closely with them, it's always nice training in the sun and in a different environment.
"Pre-season's a slog, you've got five weeks training and it's hard work everyday so sometimes it can do you good just to get away from everything. Some of the lads have got children that they don't like to be away from, but over there they can get some sleep, wake up, go to training and relax and concentrate on that.
"Make no mistake, we're going over there to work and we'll be working hard everyday. I'll be looking to piece together my team now, ready for the Barnsley game."
