Chesterfield made their way up into the playoff positions with a controlled and comprehensive 3-0 win over Crawley Town at the Proact.
The Spireites moved up into the League 1 play-off places after a complete performance against a Crawley Town side who didn't threaten to perform above their lowly league standing of bottom in the division.
Eoin Doyle struck twice to further raise his season's goalscoring tally, while Jay O'Shea scored a pearler to seal the three points and a key position in the fight for promotion.
Chesterfield started the brighter, with Dan Jones and Sam Clucas exploiting the left wing to put in some dangerous crosses, but they were well dealt with by the Crawley defence.
Meanwhile, Jones, Clucas and Tendayi Darikwa did well to make the post of the wings to threaten the visitors with width in the opening minutes, while Armand Gnanduillet was causing all kinds of trouble in the leaky Crawley backline, forcing 'keeper Lewis Price into a save from a low header after 15 minutes.
Crawley could have taken the lead though, with a 27th minute header from Jimmy Smith bouncing off the crossbar after a wicked free kick.
In addition to that, Tommy Lee was perhaps fortunate to see a spilled catch deemed as a Crawley foul, as the follow up was turned in for what could have been a moment of ignominy for the home stopper.
However, in the 34th minute, the Spireites did take the lead, with Gnanduillet knocking the ball down exceptionally for Doyle to allow the Irishman a run and dribble into the box, before a lethal finish into the bottom left-hand corner opened the scoring.
After the break, there were two goals scored with stunning rapidity, doing much to dispel the notion that Chesterfield can’t put away their clear chances.
After 51 minutes, Jay O’Shea cut in from the right and curled a stunning effort past Price to double the Spireites’ lead, before Doyle made it three for the night, passing the ball into the net when released once more.
Doyle could have had his hat-trick on 72 minutes, but Price got down excellently to tip it wide, even though only a goal kick was given – to think that an in demand, trailblazing hit-man would cleanly miss with the goal at his mercy was somewhat far fetched.
There was a moving moment reserved for the end of the match, when Drew Talbot returned from his long injury playoff to replace the impressive Darikwa, and looked impressive in his cameo.
At the full time whistle, there could be no doubting that the result was deserved – a commanding, composed, confident Spireites performance to earn them that spot in fifth.
