A team full of first and second year scholars including trialists swept Matlock Town aside in a friendly match at Shirebrook on Friday night. The Spireites ran out 4-0 winners, on an AstroTurf pitch.
Striker Ricky German put Chesterfield on their way to the win, after Owen Clark played a neat through ball into the path of German who finished well on 11 minutes.
Joe Rowley scored from a free kick adding to the score line, then German grabbed his second in the 53rd minute.
Under 16s player Alfie Dodworth scored the fourth and final goal linking up well with Rowley.
Assistant professional development phase coach John Bilton gave his reflection on the game: “We are happy with the clean sheet, they didn’t offer too many challenges defensively.
"The major challenges Matlock offered were their physical ability, they were bigger than us but I wouldn’t say they were stronger. Because we were pressing a lot we had to make sure that when in possession we kept in position.
"We had to make sure our defenders were in the right position so they don’t get hit on the counter attack.
"What I wanted to get out of the game was just about the right level. What I didn’t want was to play against a really tough opponent, considering the side that we selected.
"It was about building confidence going forward, getting some challenges offered to us in defending but not too much. The defenders have leaked a few goals recently and we have done some work on the training ground with them.
"I wanted them to develop some confidence and we established further contacts with Matlock Town, we are going to play some of their older players and let some of our lads go there on work experience."
