Spireites Players Visit Chesterfield Royal Hospital
20 December 2015
The entire Spireites playing squad this week made their annual trip to Chesterfield Royal Hospital to hand out presents to the patients in the children's ward.
The players joined Chester the Field Mouse in spreading the Christmas cheer, meeting the young patients, taking photos and giving them presents to open.
Angel Martinez was among the Spireites on present-giving duty, and enjoyed doing his bit: "It's a great chance to come and visit the hospital, see the kids and make some children happy.
"We are very fortunate to be able to do that because we are privileged to come, give presents to to the children and we are happy to help them.
"I have three daughters myself and I feel fortunate because I can give everything to them but to see children with problems makes you think seriously about life - so it's so nice to come here and help make the children smile."
Peter Whiteley for the Chesterfield FC Community Trust gave details of the generosity behind the huge stack of presents donated for the worthy cause.
"We always get the players to contribute each year," he said. "The players have dug into their pockets and we've been to the Club Superstore and one or two other places.
"We've also had the toy appeal this year and members of the general public have come in and donated toys. We've given them out here today and we even have a few spare ones that we will leave here at the ward for other children who are here over the Christmas period.
"It's a horrible time to be in hospital, so for the players to come in, make a bit of a fuss of them and be given a handful of presents must be great."
