Che Adams was the thorn in the Spireites' side as his two goals early in each half gave Sheffield United a 2-0 win over Chesterfield at Bramall LaneAn early Adams goal was the difference at the break as the teenager was first to react in the box when Tommy Lee saved from Conor Sammon, the ball rolling into Adams' path.
The second period started in identical fashion as Adams was again the quickest in the box and fired the Blades two goals ahead within 60 seconds of the restart.
The hosts took the lead with the first attack of the game after Conor Sammon was released down the left-hand side, his shot was parried away by Lee but only as far as Adams who fired the ball into the back of the net with poise.
Chesterfield responded well to the early setback and peppered the home side’s area with crosses and almost found an equaliser when Ian Evatt found himself in space in the box but his attempted cut back was cleared behind for a corner.
The Spireites again came close to levelling the game in the 18th minute following a swift counter attack led by Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who made a powerful run before finding Jay O’Shea on the wing, his cross found its way to the ever impressive Dan Gardner and his half-volley was deflected just wide of the Blades goal.
The half carried on in the same vein with the visitors doing the most pressing and trying to force an equaliser.
In the 37th minute, new signing Lee Novak turned sharply before testing Mark Howard at his near post, with the 'keeper holding on well.
The second period started as the first with the Blades and Adams getting their second of the game. Pressure from the Blades on the Spireites back four saw the ball eventually find its way to Adams who was first to react and again finished cooly.
Again Chesterfield responded well to conceding and ten minutes later had a great chance to find a route back into the game when Novak found himself one on one with the keeper, but he wasn’t able to get his shot away before the defender managed to recover well and make a swift challenge.
In the next passage of play Adams had a good chance to complete his hat-trick following a counter attack and he forced Lee into a fine save down to his left hand side.
Chesterfield came within inches of getting back into the game with just over 20 minutes to play after a fine ball was put into the box from the left hand side, Howard came and managed to tip the ball onto the bar with the Spireites unable to force home the rebound.
The Blades had another good chance to kill the game off when they broke forward through Scougall but he could only hit his shot straight at Lee.
The Spireites huffed and puffed in the final stages of the game but were unable to break down a resolute Sheffield United defence, the home side taking the points from the early season encounter.
