Spireites manager Dean Saunders saw his team end their pre-season campaign with another win as they overcame Hartlepool United 1-0 at Victoria Park.In sunny but blustery conditions, Sam Morsy's 75th-minute goal secured the game for the visitors with Tommy Lee confirming the win with some top-class saves.
After the match Saunders explained the the contest was another tough one in a pre-season programme also containing two recent Premier League sides.
"I think that was probably the toughest game we've had," he said. "They're a good team, they're well organised and I knew it would be tough because they ended last season really well.
"We played some great football, had some great movement, there was not enough cutting edge in front of goal but we won the game with a great goal from Sam Morsy and a great move."
After a week that saw Tendayi Darikwa and Sam Clucas depart for Burnley and Hull City respectively, Saunders had a bright spot in the return to the starting 11 for Drew Talbot.
Saunders said: "Between Rodger [Wylde] and Mal [Purchase] they've got him right now and got his legs stronger. He's now got pads in his shoes because his feet weren't actually going down properly, which affects the rest of his body. Hopefully we've got that sorted.
"He played well today, it took him a while to get into the game, but he showed some composure on the ball and got through 45 minutes, that was the main thing."
Saunders knows that his task now is to add pieces to his squad and he feels confident that he will be able to do just that.
"We've lost four starters from the team that's done well last season and that's a big chunk to lose out of your team," the manager said. "There's a bit of rebuilding invloved but I'm onto it, we've got lists of players that we're looking at and we'll make sure we bring the right players in."
