Summer signing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake played a major part in the Spireites' opening day victory over Barnsley and even opened his account for the club with a debut goal.

The former Manchester United trainee joined the club as a free agent in the summer and believes that his new team were the better team throughout on Saturday, even after going behind.

He told PlayerHD: “I thought we showed great character after going one-nil down and I felt that we were the better team for the majority of the game, we’re delighted to win and I’m delighted to score, it’s a great start to the season.”

“They scored with their first break but after that we pretty much controlled the game. We’ve got great character in the dressing room as you’ve seen today and even in pre-season, we’re delighted to score three goals at home and set the season off in the right way.”

The striker praised the Spireites' fitness during the match and he put this down to the fantastic work of the coaches throughout the off season: “Collectively we looked fitter than Barnsley and we’ve looked fitter than most of the teams in pre-season and that’s credit to the staff.”

Ebanks-Blake lifted the lid on the new season’s preparations, with it paying off during the 3-1 opening-day victory: “We played football right from the start of pre-season, and that’s what we did today, we played football and it showed.”

The former Wolves frontman is hoping that his opening day goal is the start of many for the Spireites and that the team can kick on in the season ahead.

He said: “Scoring the first goal just settles me in nicely and hopefully now I can go on and score a few goals. It’s always good to start as you mean to go on and we looked strong out there today, let’s make that continue.”

“There’s going to be a lot harder tests and we’ve got to not get carried away and remain focused on applying the same pressure in each game and try and win as many games as possible.”
