The Chesterfield FC Community Trust is launching an innovative new women-only group that links two of their projects together.
The new Spireites Active Women for Life Group will be run as part of the Trust’s Spireites Active for Life project - in partnership with Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust - linking up with the Football League Trust/FA-funded Female Football Development project and #ThisGirlCan.
The sessions will begin on Tuesday, May 12 and will run from 1pm to 2pm in The HUB at the Proact Stadium. The sessions are aimed at females who live with a mental health problem; this could include anxiety, depression or a more serious problem such as bipolar disorder.
Rachel Booth, the Trust’s activity & community manager, said: “Exercise is proven to be an effective way of reducing the symptoms of a mental health problem and it is also well known that women often feel more comfortable exercising in a female-only environment.
“Through the new group we aim to provide a safe, welcoming environment and to deliver a fun and sociable exercise class focused around multi-sport activities and Soccercise.”
The Spireites Active for Life project is a lifestyle intervention course aimed at adults suffering with a mental health problem. The programme aims to help people to learn about the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle and support a healthier lifestyle change. It is delivered using a football theme as a motivator to support health behaviour change.
The programme covers topics such as: Physical activity, healthy eating, stopping smoking, alcohol and drug misuse and mental wellbeing. The programme also covers a wide variety of activities including a stadium tour, football, multi-sport, dodgeball, quizzes and team building exercises.
Rachel added: “The Female Football Development project aims to increase the number of females aged 14 years plus taking part in football in any of its formats.
“Coaching sessions have been delivered in a range of secondary schools across the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire area, together with a Football Mash Up session at Chesterfield College and Soccercise at The HUB. We have lots more great sessions planned to take us up to the end of July.”
