The Spireites produced the performance of a generation as they slammed six goals past Colchester United in a glorious 6-0 Proact Stadium thumping.
Gary Roberts and a Sam Clucas quick-fire double gave the Spireites the most terrific of starts to the game, scoring the goals in a quite brilliant first half of attacking football from the hosts
After the interval Dan Gardner, then Jimmy Ryan made it four than five, before Roberts struck home a late penalty to bring up six and give a major boost to the Spireites' strengthening play-off hopes
The Spireites made one change for the match, with Dan Gardner coming in for Gboly Ariyibi in the attacking midfield positions, with centre back Ian Evatt passed fit after suffering a rib injury against Barnsley at the weekend.
The first effort in anger came for Colcester's Gavin Massey after four minutes, when he made room 20 yards from goal and fired low, but Tommy Lee in the Spireites' goal got down well to push the shot away.
However, it was the hosts who soon broke the deadlock. Drew Talbot flew down the left wing, found a cross that sat up for Roberts who took his time before firing home a powered right-footed volley to give the Spireites the perfect start.
The Spireites had been struggling to get their feet on the ball but 16 minutes in the lead was doubled when Dan Gardner waltzed his way past his man in the area, rolled it back for Clucas who blasted into the roof of the net first time from ten yards.
The home fans were then hoisted to the heavens as within seconds Jay O'Shea had nicked the ball from the Colchester kick-off, played in Clucas who grabbed the Spireites' third with a deft dink over the onrushing goalkeeper Chris Lewington.
The U's threatened on 30 minutes as Lee pulled off a fine sprawling save to keep out Massey, and ten minutes later was equally strong to stand tall with former Chesterfield loanee Chris Porter bearing down on his goal and block the striker's effort.
Clucas went close to completing a first half hat-trick on the stroke of the break as Gardner again rolled the ball back to him in the area, but this time Lewington produced a strong diving save to palm the ball away - the Spireites having to settle for three goals in a first 45 minutes of spellbinding attacking football.
At the interval Colchester played their hand and made three substitutions, yet two minutes after the break and the Spireites again came close to another, this time O'Shea twisting in the box and firing a shot just the wrong side of Lewington's near post.
Before the hour mark Gardner was next to ink his name onto the scoresheet as a surging Sam Morsy run from halfway caused panic, before he laid it sideways to Gardner who his shot struck hard from 22 yards, through the 'keeper's buttery gloves and in for the night's fourth.
It was very soon five as Ryan staked a claim for a late entry for goal of the season. From his own half he flew, exchanged passes with Gardner, and flicked a delicate chip over Lewington to bring up a famous Spireites five.
On a night of hyperbolic Spireites attacking football, substitute Gboly Ariyibi nearly added a sixth when build-up play between O'Shea and Roberts played in the winger, but his low shot was blocked as it made its way goalwards.
The goalscoring wasn't complete however, as Roberts slotted home his second from the penalty spot. Roberts himself was brought down by the 'keeper Lewington as he strolled in on goal and was calmness personified as he buried the penalty to give Chesterfield their sixth on the night.
The scoring finally ended there as the Spireites struck six for the first time in a home league match since 1979 and took a giant stride towards the Sky Bet League 1 play-offs.
