The Chesterfield youth team fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United on Saturday, despite dominating the majority of the game in a top-of-the-table clash.
The hosts gained the lead inside 20 minutes when a teasing delivery was headed past a stranded Jake Smith in the young Spireites’ goal.
Despite maintaining a consistent goal threat, the Iron were able to hold out and deny Chesterfield from grabbing a share of the spoils.
Besides the result, youth team manager Mark Smith praised his side’s performance.
He said: “Especially in the first-half, I think that is the best I have ever seen us play. We created chance after chance, a little bit like the first team and how they finished on Saturday. They had one move into our area and scored from it.
“We deserved to get something out of the game. We were committed, we played at the right time, but I think they had one chance from a corner and scored.
"We weren’t quite as good in the second half as we were in the first, but overall we’ve come away from the game against a decent Scunthorpe team showing how far we have come.”
