The Chesterfield youth team were defeated 3-1 at Doncaster Rovers, exiting the cup competition.
The hosts raced into a two-goal lead before Tope Fowodu had the chance to pull one back from twelve yards for the Spireites, but his penalty was saved well by the Doncaster ‘keeper.
Despite the miss, Mark Smith’s young guns did bring themselves back into the game with a goal from centre back Laurence Maguire, but the Blues were unable to kick on and Doncaster sealed the game late on.
The result puts the young Spireites out of the cup, with Smith expressing disappointment at the performance.
He said: “We were poor for an hour which was nothing like we have been all season. It is difficult to take sometimes because we train really well, everything looks okay, but kids are kids and they really don’t understand why they have played like they played for an hour.
“We went one and then two down due to a goalkeeper mistake. We had a chance to get back into it through a penalty even though we were playing nowhere near how we can do, but unfortunately Tope Fowodu stepped up and missed.
“We did score within ten minutes of the second half starting but for some reason we didn’t kick on. We were still giving the ball away, and then we conceded a poor goal again after we had possession. We lacked a bit of quality.”
